Universities have responded to generative AI by trying to catch students. My research argues that this is the wrong contest, and an unwinnable one. Rather than asking how students cheat, I intereviewed fellow HKU undergraduates how and why they use AI in their coursework.

Key findings of my 12 semi-structured interviews include reasons why students hand their work to models and their perceptions of most and least AI-resistant assessment. However, the most startling outcome was that assessments get handed to AI when they stop feeling worth doing - for instance, when there are too many assignments stacked in one class, or when a task demanded full effort for a small share of the overall course grade.
