Week 6 LiA Log: Back to Research

For my final week in my LiA, I presented some of the research I've been doing over the last year (a continuation of my first summer's Laidlaw research!)

As a Mindfulness Researcher, it was a great experience being able to attend academic conferences and present my research for the first time via an oral presentation.

During my last week of my LiA in June, I attended the International Conference on Mindfulness - Asia Pacific and the HKCPsych International Mental Health Congress.

I was definitely nervous about presenting my research to the leading academics in my field. Some of the things I did to prepare was asking my supervisor for general advice about oral presentations and public speaking to familiarize myself with how they worked, and sent my slides to my supervisor so I could make revisions based on his feedback.

Although I was still experiencing some residual symptoms from my concussion (see Week 5 LiA Log), I was able to participate in attending the conference. I still took breaks where I needed, and overall really enjoyed this experience.

One of my highlights was seeing one of my research heroes, Dr. Willem Kuyken present in-person. It was amazing getting the opportunity to speak with him as well.

As it gets closer to the end of the summer, I'm currently preparing my PhD applications. Very much inspired by some of the conversations I've had at these conferences and grateful to be taking what I've learnt to broaden my perspective, which has been informing how I prepare my research proposals.

Thank you to Laidlaw Foundation for funding these experiences for youth and for the UofT Laidlaw Coordinators for your guidance in organizing scholars for their respective experiences and Laidlaw-related educational journeys.
