Monday, August 10th, was a good, good day! I was making great progress on the literature review – I was working through my keywords on a newspaper database and trying to narrow down and categorize the search results. I was not about nor willing to read 3000 articles in 3 weeks for the second summer in a row, so organization was crucial.
I also attended a research meeting on Monday, led by one of FrameWorks’ Principal Researchers, Charlotte! This meeting was about interview etiquette and how to mitigate problems as they come up. For example, since politics is incredibly personal, what do you do if a participant starts crying? What if those of polarizing views clash and there’s a fight? Or even simple issues, such as what do you do when there are technical issues in an online interview? Since this is political research, you will come across people with views you find disgusting and racist. How do you acknowledge that and move on to the next participant? You probably do not want to say “That’s great,” or “That’s amazing.” The most useful phrase I learned from this meeting was “That’s helpful, thank you for sharing.” This is exactly what I mean when I say, communication is key. Little tweaks in phrasing can make a massive difference in how people interpret your words, and ultimately how they perceive you.
