Climate Justice, Equality and Activism: Nyombi Morris

Having celebrated International Day of Social Justice last Thursday, we recognise the words of Nyombi Morris, a climate activist upholding climate justice and gender equality. Morris's words highlight this year's theme of "Strengthening a Just Transition For a Sustainable Future". Morris's quote emphasises the intersection between environmental sustainability and equality, and the importance of valuing human lives over profit:

A Trailblazer in Climate Justice

Nyombi Morris is both a climate activist and CEO of the youth-led nonprofit organisation Earth Volunteers. He became an activist following a tragic event in which floods generated by the deforestation of the Bugoma Forest demolished his family's farm, driving them to relocate. Following this, he spoke to CBC chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton, explaining the devastating effects of climate change on his country. At the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), he conveyed to global leaders "To put an end to fossil fuels and make polluters pay."

Morris states, "Climate activism means equality, peace and justice. Almost everything that happens around the world is interconnected", highlighting this year's theme and the connection between climate change and social inequality. Morris emphasises the link between preserving natural resources and respecting people's lives: they are inherently intertwined.

Leadership Driven by the Pursuit of a Sustainable Future

Morris's words outline the fact that it's important for leaders to lead with people's lives at the forefront. A relentless pursuit of profit can lead to devastating effects, both on the environment and on the people who are tragically affected by climate change. Conversely, inclusive policies can make sure that "climate action leads to more and better jobs, reduces inequalities, and fosters sustainable development" (UN, 2025).

Morris's approach emphasises the Laidlaw value of being #Good and the Oxford Character Project Leadership Virtue of #Justice. Being good means holding the environment and people's lives above profit. Justice means working to benefit the community.
