Inspiration, Leadership, and Climate Action: Mia Mottley
As COP29, The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference ends, we celebrate the words of Mia Mottley, the Prime Minister of Barbados. A truly inspirational figure, Mottley has passionately campaigned against climate change, creating a bold plan to phase out fossil fuels by 2030. Mottley's quote emphasises the importance of a leader inspiring others to action:
Leading through Action and Inspiration
Mia Mottley is a politician and attorney from Barbados. In 2018, she was elected Prime Minister, impressively with over 70% of the popular vote. She was the first female Prime Minister of Barbados following independence in 1966 and the first female Leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP). Mottley was chosen as Champion of the Earth for Policy Leadership 2024, having been an exceptional and passionate advocate against climate change, pollution and deforestation for many years.
In her quote, Mottley highlights the importance not only for leaders to create visions, but also inspire others to take action. Her work strongly reflects this idea. A recent UNEP report indicates that we are heading to a global temperature increase of 2.7 degrees, which could prompt cataclysmic alterations to the planet's ecosystems. Encouraged by Mottley, Latin America and the Caribbean was established as the first region to agree on the Action Plan for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, an initiative to avoid and reverse the segregation of natural surroundings globally.
Leadership Grounded in Challenging the Status Quo
Mottley's words and actions highlight that to make a real, global impact, it is not just enough to take action alone. It is Mottley's global impact and influence on others that demonstrates her prowess as a leader. Whilst Mottley is a visionary, advancing ideas and plans, she is clear that the next steps must be to create change through inspiring others and spreading this vision, taking swift action on environmental matters.
This emphasises the Laidlaw values of being #Fast and #Good. Being fast means acknowledging that environmental issues are urgent and need to be addressed now as well as in the future. Being good is to work with others to be more sustainable and create meaningful change on a global scale.
