Residential 1 and 2

An overview of the two residentials I attended in June with the Laidlaw Scholars Programme at Weetwood Hall and Selside in the Yorkshire Dales.

In June I had the privilege of taking part in two residential weekends as part of the Laidlaw Programme. They offered very different but equally valuable experiences in my development as both a researcher and a leader.

Residential 1: Westwood Hall

The first residential brought together my Laidlaw cohort with the 2024 scholars for a weekend where we were introduced to the exciting opportunities the programme will offer over the next two years.

A highlight for me was the dinner hosted by the Laidlaw Foundation, where we connected not only with fellow scholars but also with university staff who offered personal insights into the programme and broader opportunities at Leeds.

Over the weekend, we explored our Quintax reports, reflected on our leadership styles and challenged ourselves in experiential learning activities. I was encouraged to step outside my comfort zone and consider how I respond under pressure, how I collaborate and the type of leader I aspire to be.

Residential 2: Selside, Yorkshire Dales

The second residential was a completely different experience, focussed on outdoor adventure and experiential learning in the Yorkshire Dales. From hiking and caving to ghyll scrambling and group cooking, we were constantly learning through challenges and shared experience.

Navigating dark caves, clambering up waterfalls, and working together as a team reminded me that leadership often means leaning into discomfort, staying adaptable and being resilient.

Both residential weekends taught me that leadership is as much about embracing uncertainty and discomfort as it is about vision and direction. I am very excited about my Laidlaw journey ahead.
