Career transitions are complex experiences that often involve multiple simultaneous shifts which can be complicated by other aspects of non-work life. In particular, immigrants undergoing career transitions may be entering a new role in a new industry but also must adjust to a different culture and labour market in their new country. To examine the impacts of the bootcamp model on the career transition experience, I conducted an interview study of participants in a program for “digital agriculture” occupations in western Canada, paying special attention to the differences between immigrant and non-immigrant participants. I first review the existing research on different types of career transitions before describing my findings related to the motivations and benefits experienced by the bootcamp participants.
