With the release of generative AI (GenAI) tools, students worldwide are using it to inform their academic work. Here, I focus on the HKU students’ behaviours when using GenAI tools in their studies. I interview students from different disciplines about their academic usage of GenAI. I collect information about their own usage, their notice of their friends’ usage, their opinions on the strengths and limitations of the current GenAI tools, and their tricks for taking benefits from GenAI in their disciplinary courses, language courses, and common core courses.
The methodology of the study is through a series of interviews, analysis, and discussion of the information collected. I aim to find some suggestions to promote smarter and more effective usage of GenAI in academic work for HKU students.
The limitation at the current stage is that the study only focuses on HKU students. However, after this stage, I will try to expand the group of the study and apply the solutions to a wider group of students. I will also try to suggest to the community their usage of generative AI tools during the leadership project, using the insights gained from the research.
