Reflected to Lead: Gratitude, Equity, and the 3C’s of Leadership

Returning from the Annual Laidlaw Scholars Conference

Attending the Laidlaw Scholars Conference in London, Imperial College London, was a profoundly grounding and inspiring experience. Standing in a room filled with scholars from around the globe, all united by a shared passion for social impact, gave me a tangible sense of what it means to belong to a global community of ethical leaders.

Reflecting on my journey through the Laidlaw Scholarship—and the conversations sparked at the conference—has challenged me to think deeply about who I am as a leader, what drives my purpose, and how I can continue to serve as a responsible global citizen.

1. Character: Leadership Rooted in Gratitude and Stewardship

For me, true leadership starts with humility and self-awareness. Looking back on my educational journey, I am reminded daily of how much I have been blessed. My academic achievements were not solely the product of my own hard work; they were made possible because I was given access to quality education, resources, and mentorship.

Realigning My "Why" Away from the Rat Race

During my time at university, it was far too easy to get caught up in the high-pressure environment and the constant "rat race" of academic competition and career ladder-climbing. In the midst of endless assignments and deadlines, I lost sight of how blessed I already was and forgot the original reason I started working hard in the first place: to serve and empower others. My journey through the Laidlaw Scholarship served as a crucial wake-up call. It stripped away the superficial noise, grounded my perspective, and reminded me that my education is not a tool for personal status, but a gift to be shared with those who need it most.

This realization shaped my Character throughout the program:

  • Humility & Integrity: Understanding that talent and hard work exist everywhere, but opportunity does not. Recognizing my privileges has taught me that leadership is not about personal status, but about stewardship—using the resources and platform I have been given to serve others.

  • Moral Courage: True character means acknowledging systemic inequalities and using one’s voice to advocate for those who are overlooked.

2. Change-Maker Values: Championing Educational Equity

The Laidlaw commitment to social justice deeply aligns with my core conviction: education is the ultimate starting point to break cycles of poverty.

Throughout my Leadership in Action (LiA) journey and my time as a scholar, my Change-Maker Values have been grounded in a single, driving vision:

  • Equal Opportunity: There are countless individuals around the world who possess immense perseverance and talent, yet lack access to basic education purely because of where they were born. It isn't fair, and as leaders, we cannot remain indifferent.

  • Empowering the Next Generation: Focus on creating sustainable, long-term educational access—particularly for young girls and marginalized youth—ensures that capability meets opportunity.

My faith and personal values drive me to act as an ethical global citizen, ensuring that the doors opened for me are used to unlock doors for others.

3. Capacities: Developing a Global Mindset

The Laidlaw program and the Annual Conference have significantly expanded my leadership Capacities:

  • Cross-Cultural Empathy & Global Mindset: Engaging with international peers and navigating complex global issues taught me to listen first, understand diverse cultural contexts, and approach problem-solving with empathy rather than assumptions.

  • Action-Oriented Leadership: I have developed practical skills in project design, resource management, and strategic collaboration—learning how to turn empathy into concrete, measurable impact on the ground.

Moving Forward: Leading Ethically as a Global Citizen

The Laidlaw Scholarship is not a final destination; it is a springboard. As I step forward into the next chapter of my academic and professional life, I commit to:

  1. Leading with Ethics & Purpose: Keeping stewardship, fairness, and empathy at the center of every decision I make.

  2. Advocating for Educational Access: Continuing to partner with global initiatives, NGOs, and community programs that break down barriers to education.

  3. Fostering Inclusion: Creating environments where underprivileged, talented individuals are given the platforms and mentorship they deserve to thrive.

I am deeply grateful to the Laidlaw Foundation, my mentors, and my fellow scholars for shaping my journey. Let’s keep working together to build a more equitable world!
