Week 4 LiA Reflection

Advancements in our project deliverables

The second half of my leadership-in-action journey began on a productive note, marked by significant advancements in our project deliverables. As the templates and graphics of the 10Rs posters were already finalised in the previous week, we started inputting information, including definitions and concrete actions of each of the 10Rs onto our posters. During our Friday meeting with Piero, we discussed the potential of transforming our posters into a booklet for kids attending the summer camp at Huerto Roma Verde. This transformation will expand the project’s impact, as kids could take the booklets home and revisit the content anytime. We plan to develop the booklet next week.

Alongside the poster development, we also continued integrating information of native plants and designing a stencil for waste separation. This tool will encourage people to replicate sustainable waste sorting practices at home, school, or work. This week was surely a productive one and we were thrilled with the progress made.

Visiting Genera Territorios

This week, we visited Genera Territorios, an organisation dedicated to the regeneration of rural and urban territories through environmental and local economic projects. One highlight was tasting locally produced honey by regional beekeepers, which was eye-opening to witness the diversity and complexity of the honey. The effort made by Genera Territorios transforms communities through the emphasis on environmental regeneration and local economic development, promoting sustainability and community participation.

Cultural immersion: Visiting Teotihuacan and Xochimilco

Two unforgettable experiences this week were our trips to Teotihuacan and Xochimilco. Guided by José, a volunteer from the makesense project, we explored the spectacular view of the Pyramid of the Sun, had a strenuous stair climb to the Pyramid of the Moon, and enjoyed a memorable meal at a cave restaurant.

Alongside the pyramids excursion, the Genera Territorios team led us through Xochimilco, where we participated in a Temazcal – a traditional Mesoamerican ritual. During the ritual, we sat in a dome-shaped structure covered with blankets. Volcanic stones were then placed inside the structure, and water was poured onto it to create herbal vapour. We rested our bodies and minds while listening to traditional songs. The experience allowed me to immerse myself in the Mexican culture, and find tranquility and clarity in my mind.

This week was full of unique experiences and meaningful progress. I am excited to see what the next week holds.
