During my first week with make_sense in Mexico, our goal was inspiration! I arrived in Mexico City on Sunday, July 9, and spent the first two days adjusting to a new, unfamiliar city. On Tuesday, I met all of the Laidlaw Scholars in Mexico and the make_sense team. It was an enjoyable and educational experience to meet people from all over the world. We spent the first few days of the program doing training and information sessions regarding how we would complete our projects. I also learned that my project would be focusing on awareness of HIV prevention medication for Mexico City's LGBTQ+ community, which is a very interesting and pertinent topic. On Thursday, we met with an Indigenous chief, and visited a farm in Xochimilco. These experiences opened my eyes to issues involving Indigenous groups and climate change in Mexico, and allowed me some perspective as to what projects we are working on here. The last day of this week, we had a cultural fair where I was able to share about my life in Canada. The cultural fair was a great idea, as it made me feel more connected to the others in the group by learning about their lives. I felt as though everything this week went well! I felt like I was able to bring a positive attitude to our group activities this week. I was also grateful to meet and learn about the people who I will be spending the next 6 weeks with!
