Date: July 27-31
This week, it is the final week of camp with the older age group (9-13 years old)! Lots of preparation and energy is high as teachers / counsellors are ready to give it their final push.
What went well?
Since it is my final week of camp, I knew it would be my last chance to collect any personal information from the counsellors. I focused a lot of my time this week sorting through information and filtering them to see if there is any more questionnaires or data that would be crucial. I finally ended with asking both camps to rank different "learning modules" on a tier list for what they would've wanted training in the most now that they are almost done camp. In addition, I asked them questions about how they retrospectively feel about their leadership experience.
What could have been done differently?
Since a lot of my work was mostly online, my productivity would've been higher if I stayed home some days instead of attending in-person. This is because being in camp is loud with the children and the offices are not always closed door. As such, I had wasted time commuting, being pulled away do to certain activities at camp and not being able to fully focus on sorting through the data I needed.
What did I learn about myself when working with others?
Community is extremely important and undervalued. Going into the LiA, I thought that building connections with others wouldn't be the most important aspect. As I underwent this project, I realized the importance of having strong relations with others because it made it a lot easier for me to ask them casual follow-up questions or have them feel comfortable sharing their true thoughts with more detail.
What did I learn about leadership?
Moving forward, I want to build on my ability to strengthen my relations with others in a professional setting. I feel that at times, I distanced myself to do work on my computer which isolated myself in social settings such as lunch break. I want to spend more time putting myself out there and realize that the social aspect of leadership is just as valuable as hard/technical skills.
