Week Four:
Joining a new community isn't only about work! How do you spend your free time, and what do you do for fun? Upload a photo and include a narrative that describes a moment when you learned something new, tried something new, or connected with someone new as part of your Laidlaw experience.
Unfortunately, I had to leave St. Lucia due to complications with my passport. But I’ll write about my experience there.
In St. Lucia, I spent most of my free time exploring the island and getting to know people outside of work, often with Keeghan, the leader of the local organization I was partnered with. He showed me around Castries, the island's capital, including the main church in the city. It was wonderful to walk around the architecture, I also got to see the old college they have on the island.
Another fun experience was the Friday Night Street Party, which Keeghan also took me to. It's a government-sponsored event where local musicians play and vendors line a street packed with restaurants and bars. It was incredibly vibrant and high energy, and was definitely a different environment compared to what I am used to. The music was loud and the local food was good (grilled conch).
Beyond the city, I visited the marina and hiked through the mountains, which offered a greener side of St. Lucia. I enjoyed walking back each day after work to catch the sunset.
I also went to the beach with some of my co-workers but I did not stay long because I got sunburnt. I did get a fresh coconut though.
