This week, as part of my LiA with Sojourners for Justice Press, I volunteered at the New York Poetry Fest on Governor's Island! I had never been to GI before the event and I was excited to see a new landmark in the city. The ferry was free before 11am and it was a quick ride to the island. I saw people riding bikes and walking around immediately after departing from the ferry. The island was much bigger and greener than I had imagined in my head. I think the green part was probably due the huge downpour of rain the city has been experiencing lately. We've been oscillating between extreme (even for me as an Arizonan!) heat and a lot of rain. Originally, the festival was scheduled for last week, but due to rain, it was moved to this past weekend. It was such a nice break from being inside all of the time because of the weather and the sun was out, yet it was unbearably hot.
It was really cool to see so many independent artists table their work and I was able to hear many of the poetry readings happening on stages around the event space as I was tabling. It was a great little adventure and break to what was becoming a little monotonous (but not boring) doing work from home, libraries or cafes these past few weeks. Even better because my screen time went down!
