What went well?
The progress I made; what was achieved and done
Alongside my role as a lead instructor, I had the privilege of guiding students on a field trip to Seaport. In this field trip, students sought inspiration on how they would change their community positively through technology and art. The field trip went well, and each scholar guided a group of students at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art).
What could have been done differently?
Things that did not get done and/or could be changed
Seaport was a great place to visit. Although I think it would be better if we had more time to visit the Seaport, it might not be the best idea since our students are 14-19 years old and they get bored easily when not doing physical-related activities. Therefore, there was nothing we would do differently.
What did I learn about myself when working with others?
Contributions, behaviours and values I exhibited
I learned about the value of teaching outside the class (during the field trip). I led the students through a place that I never visited before. They were more familiar with the place than I was. However, this did not stop me from adding value during their field trip by instilling a curiosity about the art exhibited while they introduced me to the things they knew. This reciprocal exchange enabled them to expand their knowledge both in familiar and unfamiliar domains.
What did I learn about leadership?
Leadership attributes and insights I developed
I learned more about each student's personality. During the time I spent focusing on a small group of students, the students who usually did not get a chance to talk now talk more. This realization emphasized the importance of affording every student the opportunity to voice their opinions. In future leadership roles, this awareness will guide me to foster an inclusive environment where all voices are heard.
What do I want to develop or focus on next?
What I still need to develop
My focus will extend to methods of effectively igniting interest and collaboration among peers. I aim to refine my ability to communicate and share a compelling vision that resonates with others.
