LiA - Week 3

Due to confidentiality reasons, it's hard to share a more interesting photo, so here's a view out of the window of the office space.

It is a little challenging to describe a typical day since I've been trying to experience a variety of aspects of the UK healthcare system from a typical day in clinic to getting consent forms and speaking to people about screening. Most days, I will come into the office space in the morning and prep materials for that day. I will often spend some of this time reading papers related to lung cancer screening just to gain more understanding of the field and so that I can more effectively communicate. After that, I will usually go with my mentor to do a consent or patient related job. Yesterday was quite exciting since I got to learn about and see how patients undergoing surgery for lung cancer can consent to donate tissue to research. This was something that I hadn't really thought about before, even though it is very important for a multifaceted initiative like SUMMIT. I found it particularly exciting since it filled in a gap in my knowledge about how basic research connects to the patient facing side of healthcare. Once that is done, I will typically go back to the office, where there are regularly meetings or presentations. Then I typically end the day doing some work looking at the consent forms and trying to understand why some patients who have consented to don't show up for their treatment plans.

I would say that a major goal of mine in this project was to gain a deeper understanding of how the health care system in the UK works, focusing on what affects the patient experience. My experience so far has largely reflected this goal, as I've gotten to see and participate in a large variety of facets of the system.
