LiA Week 1 Reflection

Reflection of my first week of my LiA.

Week 1:

What went well?

The introductory trainings and meeting with the team went well this week. We began with multiple trainings that served as introductions to social justice work in DC, understanding our own social identities and how that impacts our work, and learning how to organize immersive programming for students who have never been in a new environment. I feel like all of this training will really help serve my goal of making a guide to immersive programming by the end of the summer.

What could have been done differently?

Next week I want to begin documenting more of the trainings and readings that I found helpful when discussing immersive programming in social justice. If I can begin to keep a more regular record of what I find useful, I think I'll have an easier time accumulating all that I learn for my deliverable.

What did I learn about myself while working with others?

I learned that I really enjoy hearing diverse perspectives before making a decision on anything. I feel like I need to accumulate all of the knowledge about something prior to making decisions, especially when creating programming that will affect so many stakeholders.

What did I learn about leadership?

I learned that as a leader, I have to first undergo the experiences and do the learning for myself that I hope to impart on others through the programs I create. Especially because my program will impact students from a wide range of backgrounds (high schoolers, first-year college students, international students), I need to first understand how our programming will impact me and my identities prior to having others undergo it.

What do I want to develop or focus on next?

I want to focus on starting my guide to best-practices in immersive programming as I continue to train and learn about creating an immersive program for social justice in DC.
