What went well?
The progress I made; what was achieved and done
- Introduced to some Fijian culture
- Welcomed by the ThinkPacific team with a traditional Fijian ceremony Sevusevu, in which we were provided with virtual drinks
- Gained more understanding on Vanua - I was impressed by how Fijians shared a strong sense of belonging to their homeland even if they were far from their country
- Gained a brief understanding of the origins of the Fijian language and the relations between Fijian dialects from Dr. Geraghty
- Introduced to the Challenge that my team has to work on in the coming 6 weeks! We also got in contact with Psychiatric Survivors Association, and learnt more about our task 😊
- Worked on a presentation on Cultural Fluency with my team! We prepared a Powerpoint and hopefully, it would be informative and engaging to our audience next week~
- Had a brief understanding of the non-communicable diseases in Fiji and the Pacific
What could have been done differently?
Things that did not get done and/or could be changed
- I realised that there were actually many extra materials posted by the ThinkPacific team on the Mighty Networks that I haven’t had time to discover, so I wish to spend more time online to get a more immersive internship experience
- I would love more interactions with my team, but the time zone differences in my team made that pretty hard
What did I learn about myself when working with others?
Contributions, behaviours and values I exhibited
I learnt that I am quite strong in turning complex ideas into simple terms to be put into a presentation, but sometimes I was not courageous to speak up and share my ideas, especially in a new team with unfamiliar fellows.
What did I learn about leadership?
Leadership attributes and insights I developed
Make the first move to get things done, which might set a more effective example to the others.
What do I want to develop or focus on next?
What I still need to develop
Be more proactive in team meetings and more willing to speak up, but I believe this will improve when I get more familiar with my teammates.
