Time Period:
June 19th - July 23rd (5 weeks in total), pre-project starting on June 14th.
Location:
NAAC Tung Chung Neighbourhood Centre, HKSAR
Project:
Extra-curriculum English teaching activities for Kindergarten and Primary School Children
Details:
Self-prepared English classes. Two class each week, one for K2-K3 children, one for P1-P3 children. As schools in Tung Chung tend to have poorer educational quality and parents of those children are often too busy to take care of them, after-school English classes would be helpful for them to follow English requirement in HK.
Development of Laidlaw Attributes:
(1). Leadership Abilities: The project is completely self-initiated, with intensive negotiation efforts already conducted in 2023 Spring, which nurtures the ability to lead without authority and to build new coalitions from scratch with a common purpose.
(2). Self-knowledge and Awareness: The project centres on teaching young children English, which is vastly different from my current academic major. Such challenge will encourage me to learn constantly and adapt quickly to my limitations.
(3). Effective Communicator: The project is about teaching English with English to young children, who have only limited English skills. Therefore, flexible and comprehensible communication ability would be crucial, and would be developed gradually during the process of receiving feedbacks and developing class materials.
(4). Critical and Creative Thinker: As the projects caters some very young children, conventional English teaching approaches would not be effective, which demands intensive use of creativity and innovation. Also, as the class has to cater the needs of the children and their parents, various decisions would be made with complicated feedback information. Therefore, the class development would be a continuous process of integrating information and turning new ideas into actions.
(5). Collaboration and Team Work: The project works with the NAAC centre at Tung Chung, HKSAR, which means that I need to build relationship with culturally different people and collaborate closely with them. This process would require immense usage of social skills and would build up collaboration ability.
(6). Social and Cultural Intelligence and Awareness: This ability would be built during the process of communicating with culturally different children and NAAC staff.
(7). Resilience and Determination to Achieve: Likely, self-initiated project will encounter various unforeseeable difficulties, and I would need to solve them alone. This would be a process of realising ideals in the face of obstacles.
Raw Schedule:
Week 1:
Initial classes would focus Phonics, same for two groups of children. Main purpose is to test the ability of children to prepare future materials.
Week 2 - Week 5
Further materials would be prepared based on the feedbacks from children and NAAC staff.
Week 5:
Extra help for NAAC summer outing activity on Sunday, which is expected to last for one entire day. The project ends after that, as schools enter summer vacation.
