Laidlaw 2025 Cohort - Intro Post

Hello!

My name is María Martínez, and I’m an international student from El Salvador studying International Relations and History at Tufts University. I’m honoured to be part of the 2025 Laidlaw Scholar cohort.

As I begin my journey as a Laidlaw scholar, my research will focus on Tanzanian national identity – specifically the factors that allowed for Julius Nyerere’s nation building project to succeed in such an ethnically diverse state. Having lived in Tanzania for two years, I had the opportunity to experience and engage with the country’s culture. As such, I was always moved by the Tanzanians' strong sense of national unity and the high value placed on peaceful coexistence. Coming from a conflict ridden country myself, I believe it is important for me to understand how a collective identity can transcend division.

Ultimately, I hope for my research to provide insights into how post-colonial states can take steps towards overcoming internal conflict and focus instead on good governance. I aim to contribute meaningfully by engaging with humility, curiosity, and a commitment to intercultural dialogue and collaboration.
