Field Journal: Week 2

  • What are some of the ethical issues that you are grappling with in your research? What are some of the ways in which you are responding to these questions?

Since my project involves the transformation of bioethics throughout the course of the current administration, I have become frustrated learning about certain policies that are being enacted to ensure that science focuses less on major ethic issues that need to be addressed within research, and more about the development of artificial intelligence and machinery. Although I am personally not encountering any ethical obstacles that have disallowed me to collect my data, I am been grappling with understanding the major bioethical issue within our current administration by looking deeper into the reason behind these changes and the long-term chance of reinvestment in the future years.

  • As you continue your research, have you considered alternative viewpoints in your investigation? If so, how have these alternative viewpoints enriched or changed your project?

Yes, one alternative viewpoint that I have considered is that many universities and investigators never spoke up about the de-investment of their research; thus, those data points are more difficult to find and acknowledge as a part of the mass defunding in January 2025. This has changed by project since I have had to use a more broad approach to investigate not only awards posted by the NSF, but also news articles, university statements, and governmental policies that support the data that I am finding.

  • Where does your research take place? Take a photo of the place where your ideas and investigations are taking place, and post it to the Network!
