Field Journal, Week 1

Creative nonfiction, diverse perspectives, & beautiful views!

1. What are you most excited about as you start your Laidlaw research summer?

As I start my Laidlaw research summer, I am particularly thrilled by the opportunity to explore a new sociological topic that explores the intersections between Black identities, musical connections, and violent trauma through a uniquely creative method. I am intrigued by Professor Redmond's methods and approach to writing her book, and I look forward to getting further into the research process. I am also excited about being in New York in general, where I can explore in ways that I typically do not have the time to over the school year.

2. This week, the discussions we held about research cut across the disciplines. How does the interdisciplinary nature of this program, the fact that students are focusing on such a diverse range of projects, help you think about your project and/or your academic interests more broadly?

It's been truly inspiring to learn about the vast interests of my peers, from political science to medical humanities to neuroscience-based studies. I am fascinated by the different paths everyone is on. Despite these differences, though, I definitely think there is much to learn from each other on studying methods and how to read research papers. It also helps me think about my project through lenses that I otherwise would not be exposed to.

3. As you begin your individual research projects this week, do you anticipate any challenges in getting started? If so, what are they?

My research project start was not as smooth as I would like, but I am hoping it's uphill from here. As I go forward, I hope to get more into readings and archival research and create consistent plans for myself to approach the project.

4. Optional! This week you moved into a new dorm room and met new friends, mentors, and research collaborators. Take a photograph of something (or someone) new and post!

The beautiful view from my friend's room in Broadway!
