CraftHER by Swara 2025: LIA Week 1 Reflections

For my Laidlaw Leadership in Action project, I am participating in the CraftHER programme in Kerala, India. This opportunity involves working closely with local craftswomen to learn about their trades and practices, centred around themes of female empowerment, sustainability, and social enterprise.

Our first week took place in Kochi, where we began by meeting our cohort, starting a daily yoga practice, and engaging in a variety of workshops that helped us set intentional goals for the weeks ahead. These sessions were invaluable in strengthening our sense of purpose and building a strong community within the group. Alongside this, we immersed ourselves in the local culture, trying incredible food, exploring the backwaters, and visiting Fort Kochi to see the traditional Chinese fishing nets and vibrant markets.

A particularly insightful visit was to Save the Loom, where we learned about post-disaster craft preservation and the organisation’s role in rebuilding livelihoods for female weavers after the 2018 floods. We were able to observe traditional weaving techniques firsthand and explore beautiful clothing designed by local artisans.

We also took part in a fitness event led by Sanjana George and Swara, where we discussed cultural and generational barriers to women’s fitness in India and joined in a Hyrox-style group workout. I found this experience especially meaningful, as we had the chance to speak directly with local women about their personal fitness journeys and challenges.

Another highlight was visiting the Milan Design Boutique on its opening day and attending the launch party in the evening. Exploring the store's stunning fabrics and hearing from the founder about her journey to creating this dream space offered valuable insight into female entrepreneurship. Wearing sarees to the event was a special experience, adding to an already memorable first week of learning, connection, and cultural exchange.
