Hello Laidlaw!!
Firstly, I would like to redact a statement from last week’s blog. Hiking in the pouring rain and sleeping on the floor did not actually cure my sickness. Instead I got strepsalitus and have been extra ill all week. I hate it when my mum is right :(
What is really sad is that this illness has made it too painful for me to speak which is DEVASTATING because I love to talk. A lot!! It seems unfair that my ability to talk was taken away the same week that Tilly’s ability to move was taken from her. We have become quite the pitiful duo. But maybe my illness is in some ways lucky for her as it protects her from being in a situation in which I am talking too much about fungi or dancing or every theory I have ever had about anything ever and she is not able to escape because of her ankle.
SPEAKING OF ESCAPING! I WAS KIDNAPPED ON WEDNESDAY. I decided to abandon Tilly to do one last hike before returning to my telepathic/ empathy induced broken ankle. This man (featured in blog two as « the crazy scientist ») offered to drive me to the trail head and do the hike together. He proceeded to ask me out within the first 10 minutes. We had thirty more kilometres to go. Luckily this was (semi) pre strepsalitus so I still had my talking abilities and didn’t find it too hard to change the subject. Unfortunately, he had no problem asking me out again. Seven times. It was a long, long hike. He also managed to extend the drive home by including multiple stops. Hence my fear that he was kidnapping me. Upon returning to our accommodation I stared at the wall in silence for thirty minutes and swore to myself never to leave Tilly again.
Work this week has definitely been a bit slow because of my illness which made it difficult to stay awake for very long and Tilly having to do a bunch of admin because of her ankle. The only reflection I have about it is that I am so grateful to be in an environment where they understand that we have lives outside of work and that there is no point in pushing through and being miserable just for the sake of productivity. I am sure in the long term it probably will make us more productive as I was able to take some much needed rest without growing any resentment toward the research team and I am now looking forward to being fully recovered and committed to the work next week!
Okay! That is all for this week! Hopefully next week I shall be awake and healthy for enough minutes to accumulate some more thoughts!! Bye Laidlaw
