Looking back, the Laidlaw Scholars Programme has been one of the most transformative experiences of my undergraduate journey. More than the opportunities it offered, it fundamentally changed how I see myself, my abilities, and the impact I hope to create through my work.
Through the programme, I was fortunate to secure a research assistant position at the HKU Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science, where I had the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research that connected my interests in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. What began as curiosity gradually developed into the confidence to pursue ambitious research questions and collaborate with researchers from different backgrounds. The programme encouraged me not only to learn new knowledge, but also to take ownership of my own ideas and turn them into meaningful work.
One of the most memorable moments was attending the annual conference at Brown University in the United States. Having our work selected as one of the outstanding papers and being invited to present it on stage was something I never imagined I could achieve as an undergraduate. Standing in front of an international audience, answering questions from researchers, and discussing our work with experts from around the world made me realize that I truly belonged in the research community. It helped me overcome much of the self-doubt and imposter syndrome that I had struggled with throughout my studies.
Equally meaningful were the friendships I built along the way. Through Laidlaw, I met passionate and inspiring peers from different countries, disciplines, and cultures. Learning from their experiences broadened my perspective and reminded me that leadership is not only about individual achievement, but also about supporting others, embracing diverse viewpoints, and working together toward a common goal.
Above all, the programme taught me to think beyond the boundaries of my own university or discipline. It showed me that research has the potential to create real social impact and that leadership begins with the willingness to step outside one's comfort zone, embrace uncertainty, and take initiative. As I continue my academic and professional journey, I hope to carry forward the curiosity, resilience, and sense of responsibility that the Laidlaw Programme has helped me develop.
