Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880), known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English Victorian novelist. She is best known for her novel Middlemarch.

Evans used a pen name to evade the stereotype of lighthearted romance novels written by women, and to have her fiction judged separately from her already extensive and widely known work as an editor and critic.
